I've been working with wood for as long
as I can remember. But soon after moving from my native home of southern California to Nashville,
TN in 2003, I received a woodworking catalog in the mail from
Woodcraft. Within
a few months, I bought my first mini lathe and some nice Sorby turning
tools.
I began by turning small projects such
as pens, lidded boxes and bowls to develop my craft. I simultaneously
began working at Woodcraft, which is when I read a book from their
store library from Malcolm
Tibbetts on how to create segmented art... a whole new world
opened up for me.
I was immediately inspired to try segmented
turning, and have been in love with it ever since. I appreciate its
need for detail and patience. After my first segmented piece
turned out the way I wanted ("Recovery"), I knew this
was what I wanted to do.
To continue developing my craft,
I'm attending woodturning classes and symposiums. I
had the honor of attending the first Segmented Woodturners Symposium
(held at the Marc Adams School
of Woodworking) in November 2008. I look
forward to continuing developing my craft at similar future events.
